This course is open only to affiliates of Podar Jumbo Kids in India. The course will discuss 1) what to document as we observe children's work and play, 2) how to make meaning of these documents, and 3) how to use our new understanding of children in our teaching practice. You can call these three components of observation the What, So What and Now What. The course will follow this sequence, beginning with What and So What of observation. You will be asked to share your own experiences so that we can be sure that what you learn in this course has practical implications for what you do in your day-to-day work.

The course will be designed around observation of ordinary moments and the use of digital documentation. We will begin with a discussion of the article "Wondering with Children" at http://ecrp.uiuc.edu/v7n2/forman.html (view online now for free if you like). Then through an ongoing dialogue with participants, we will identify issues, interests, and objectives that will define the remaining weeks of study and exchange. The course will progress from the "what" to the "so what" to the "now what." The "so what" deals with finding the significance in a play episode that one has observed. The "now what" deals with how your insights into meaning can translate into more constructive encounters with children. We will also give you suggestions on how to create digital documenation of children's thinking in a manner that saves time and improves quality.

The course officially begins January 4, 2010 but is open now ready to go. Rolling enrollment will remain open as long as we have new traffic in the course. The course assignments usually require four weeks to complete. The course fee is $25 and will be available to participants 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Upon completion, the course will be archived for six months for participants to browse. This course can be included as a four week component of an existing course that you teach. Your students need only an Internet connection to participate. As instructor you may sign in at no charge in order to monitor your student's work.
