See What Children Know

Videative Views Video

Mathematical thinking spans our life, from the child’s first use of the word “more” to an adult trying to maximize retirement income. A child begins with some basic understanding of “this is more than that” and later the child can reason, “this is all of that.” And it is a milestone when the child understands that “some of this is always less than all of this.” Children also deal with “this is not that” which implies that “this” cannot add to or subtract from the amount of “that.” Let’s look at places where children are dealing with early math concepts as they play with water, clay, cups, and trinkets.

Note: You may have a different interpretation for some of these clips. Our purpose is to give you visual examples of what types of details are relevant to math play.

Notes from the Field

Leading Voice for Child Care
– We continue to discover websites that make us realize the depth of information that is available to early childhood care and education professionals. Look at the National Association of Child Care Resource and Referral Agencies (NACCRRA) as a great example. Not only does NACCRRA help families find quality, affordable child care, it also provides resources to educate child care providers through 700 affiliates in the United States. NACCRRA is widely known for publications that support advocacy and policy changes. Spend some time browsing their website: www/naccrra.org.
