See What Children Know
A young child is intrigued when an object sticks to her fingers. The object looks normal. It should fall from her fingers when released. Sticky objects present surprises, like two magnets that repel, large empty detergent jugs that are not heavy, a long block with a hidden weight at the end so that it does not balance in the middle. These surprises cause children to rethink their assumptions about how the physical world works. We can use the surprise nature of sticky surfaces as the reason to include them in the preschool. Sticky surfaces also present children with non-trivial problems to solve.

Notes from the Field
· Announcing EduRetreat 09
Travel to INDIA 26 Nov – 9 Dec 2009 with Dr. Lilian G. Katz & Dr. Sylvia C. Chard as Reflective Guides, making stops in New Delhi, Vadodara, Tejghad and Ahmedabad.
To experience the blend of intellect and the intuitive… a group of educators will embark on learning explorations starting from Delhi.
EduRetreat 09 will wend its way through educational practice, exclusive meetings with scholars and group reflections at the end of each day. Weaving through inspirational models in urban, rural and tribal education, the group will confront assumptions about schooling and educational practice with a deliberate attempt to go beyond those assumptions as challenged by creative alternatives encountered in India. To support this process of group reflection, the participants will meet each other online one month before the journey and continue to dialogue one month after the journey. Reading resources will be available online to prepare participants for what they will see and discuss. The resources will cover the philosophy and writings from Gandhi, Aurobindo, Tagore and J. Krishnamurti, who serve as the inspirational and the rational base for the centers we will visit. If you are interested in taking this unique opportunity to travel to North Western India with Dr. Katz and Dr. Chard, please download the information form at www.eduretreat.org .
